“What can I say about Stephen, in a panic I asked him to tutor my yr 11 in January of this year. We had been doing tutoring with someone else who did no preparation and was not making a connection with my daughter. “Thanks to Stephen, Sciences are finally making some sense and are actually enjoyable for my son ! After multiple unsuccessful interviews with local tutors, we were lucky enough to come across Stephen and honestly he doesn’t disappoint. My son had an immediate liking to Stephen and his personality, and directly after the initial interview/meeting we knew he was the man for us to assist our son in his study and preparation for the upcoming exams. After the first lesson, being an initial discussion and review with my son of his current knowledge, Stephen was able to better understand the weaker topics vs those he had more strength in knowledge on and commenced with the weaker core topics first. He reviewed the entire exam syllabus of core topics and secondary topics, with emphasis on those core topics and moving onto the secondary. “My son is bright expecting to get 9s in Sciences, however, in his AP1 exams at the end of November 2020 in Yr11 he got 5 and 6s in sciences which were the results he received before the first lockdown in March 2020. He needed urgent help to catch up with the work he missed and neglected during the pandemic. It was an emergency situation especially since my son was also facing 6th form college exams in January prior to GCSEs.
Just before Christmas my son had his first online session with Stephen. He first went through the syllabus to check my son’s weaknesses and strength, his way of learning, even his character. And then he planned a personalised schedule for him and used it to work through the topics that required more work. This structured plan was very effective and efficient that 5 2-hour lessons were just enough to cover the topics he was weaker at and helped him get ready for the college entrance exam. Thanks to him, my son passed the exam! Stephen really knows the areas where my son needs the most help and works systematically and methodically through them. His enthusiasm on the subjects also helps my son to hold to his interest and concentration throughout the lessons. His explanation on each topic is clear, thorough and well-presented with personally made power-points. After each lesson, he gives exam style homework which is then marked thoroughly identifying mistakes, weaknesses and potential achievements. After each session he also gives me feedback, which greatly helps me understand what was taught and where more attention is needed. Stephen is a professional and excellent tutor who not only taught my son with his vast knowledge on sciences but also has a genuine heart and interest in the development of him. “Our son was struggling in all three Sciences and we reached out to Stephen in the Autumn term of Year 11. We had not tried remote learning before, and had some reservations, but it is has proved to be both efficient and effective. Stephen took great care to understand from the outset which were the areas where our son needed most support, working methodically through each topic of his exam syllabus to develop a lesson plan. At the beginning, our son was of the view that he “couldn’t do” science; Stephen has succeeded in changing that around, building his self-confidence and instilling a “can do” frame of mind.
Although we have not been able to complete all we set out to do – because COVID-19 means that GCSE exams are now cancelled – we are optimistic that an assessment of our son’s performance will take into account the improvement in his grades over the past six months. Stephen delivered well-planned lessons, with engaging slides to help aid learning and understanding. This was followed up with targeted homework with practice questions on the topics studied. “My wife engaged the service of Stephen to assist with home tutorials for my daughter who was studying for her GCSEs as she needed help with physics, chemistry and biology.  Stephen really seemed to know what he was talking about and he offered great pointers and suggestions on how to answer the questions and look at the questions differently to get the answer. My daughter responded well to his teaching method, which included slide shows on a laptop and assignments after each session. “One of my original concerns was how effective online tuition could be. With Stephen that wasn’t an issue. Aside from his use of various tools to share screens etc the fact there was no travelling meant that more time could be spent on tuition and studying. In addition, having the tuition in my son’s place of study was re-in forcing the environment. Stephen’s methods clearly worked with my son because he was probably the “reluctant student” having done little in year 10 and lacking in self-belief. Stephen’s strict views on the benefits of reaching one’s potential, his methodological review of weak areas and the syllabus and then exam based homework trained my son properly for the exams. The high standards of marking (higher than his Grammar School) meant that in the tough exams, I am sure Stephen’s techniques gained him vital extra marks. Stephen’s ability to tell him off when needed and yet have a laugh with him all in the same lesson was a reflection of how much my son respected Stephen and wanted to do well for Stephen and himself.
The predicted grades in June last year were 4 biology, 6 Chemistry and 7 Physics. He obtained 7,8,8 which was very pleasing. The more important part however was how Stephen instilled the need to study across the board and apply techniques to all subjects. My son was predicted 42 points as late as March 18 and achieved 56 points. Some of that were his own efforts increasing, some were a great last minute English tutor and a little was me helping in Maths. But without Stephen changing my son’s attitude, we would not have been so happy with the overall results. “I came to Stephen in the September of my year 11 because at the end of the year 10 mocks I got a B, C and D in the sciences. I hated the sciences ever since I was young because I didn’t find them interesting and always struggled. Thanks to Stephen’s teaching style and support, one year later in the real iGCSE’s I got A* in all three, an overall double A* for double science.  “Having found Stephen at the beginning of year 11, around October, time was already scarce, and I knew I needed a lot of help in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I was struggling in school in Science lessons, and I just didn’t learn. “Stephen took my daughter from a grade C student in her mocks to an A star student in her iGCSE Chemistry result and from a mock grade B to an A grade in both Physics and Biology. “The first session Stephen asked about what I wanted to work on and what I thought I really needed help on. Stephen then went on stating the way he works and the way he was going to work with me. I thought this was excellent because he really adapted each session around the way that I work and think.Powerpoints that Stephen made for every session were awesome.
